In recent years, protection relaying based on fault component is used widely. But a large number of literatures on this subject mostly discuss the concept related to fault components from the view of application, like Power-frequency Variation, break variable,positive sequence fault components,fault-generated transients, etc. This paper discusses the characteristics of fault component using the strictly defined concept. The viewpoint of this paper contributes to understanding of these concepts and to improving research and operation level.
